We were born for this.
Fifty years ago, a team returning from the games in Lake Tahoe looked up at our mountain and saw the future. The initial pitch to bring the Olympics to Whistler came before roads, before power, before chairlifts and people. But while success didn’t come with that first try, a vision of the resort we’d one day be, was born.
Five decades later and with a firm position as one of the top resorts in the world, Whistler has become more than those pioneers could possibly have imagined. Known for the largest skiable terrain, longest ski season and longest lift-serviced vertical in North America, Whistler is an alpine playground. But while we have much to offer through all four of the seasons, right now it’s about snow - and lots of it.
For the first time in Olympic history, a community outside of the host city has been given an official designation. As the Host Mountain Resort, Whistler is welcoming 3500 athletes, their families, fans and media from around the world. The three venues, The Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Olympic Park and Whistler Creekside, will host 46 medal events in February 2010 and when the games are gone, they will form a strong legacy for the community.
Those who live here have watched the mountain grow and change along the path to fulfilling a destiny that’s been half a century in the making. But this is just the beginning. The world has come and they have seen what makes this place so special. It’s a new chapter. Be here. Stay here. We’re ready to welcome you home.
